English Language Requirements

INTO Mason


 provides English language instruction and assessment for postsecondary speakers of other languages who wish to learn English for academic, personal, or professional reasons.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

All George Mason students must have full command of academic English to be successful in their studies. For this reason, George Mason requires that applicants demonstrate English proficiency for admission consideration, regardless of citizenship. English proficiency may be demonstrated by an exam or a waiver listed below.

Please note that we will not accept exam scores older than two years.

  • IELTS One Skill Retake scores are accepted
  • IELTS Indicator scores are not accepted

Waivers for English Language Proficiency

The Office of Admissions will waive the English language proficiency test requirement for applicants who have completed one of the following:

  • U.S. Secondary School Education
    Undergraduate applicants who have graduated or will graduate from a George Mason-recognized, accredited U.S. secondary school and have attended all four years (Grades 9–12 or equivalent). Applicants must have completed college preparatory English, excluding ESL or remedial courses, with a grade of C or better in each course.
    Note: Secondary schools in Puerto Rico are excluded unless the school holds Mason-recognized accreditation
  • IB or UK Curriculum (Starting for Fall 2026 applicants)
    Undergraduate applicants who have graduated or will graduate from a school offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) or British (UK) curriculum. Applicants must have completed four years of college preparatory English, excluding ESL or remedial courses. Each English (First Language) course/exam must be completed with a grade of C or higher, or a 4 or better.
  • Waiver-Eligible Country Education
    Undergraduate applicants who have graduated or will graduate from a secondary school in a waiver-eligible country (listed below) and have attended all four years (Grades 9–12 or equivalent) at a school where English is the primary language of instruction. Applicants must have completed college preparatory English, excluding ESL or remedial courses, with a final grade equivalent to a U.S. grade of C or better.
  • College-Level English Coursework
    Undergraduate applicants who have completed at least six (6) college-level English Composition credits from a George Mason-recognized accredited institution within the United States with a grade of C or better in each course.  English courses completed at international institutions may also be considered, provided they are eligible for transfer credit.
  • Degree from the United States or a Waiver-Eligible Country
    Graduate or Undergraduate applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree or higher degree from a George Mason-recognized institution in the United States or a waiver-eligible country below.
